On Sunday 24th of October the Snooty Fox in Wakefield is putting on a night of hardcore metal headlined by Gargamel featuring hamish Glencross and members of My Dying Bride who will be finishing the evening off with the unique mellifluous, dark and heavy brand of doom metal for which they are renowned. Other bands include Venificus Hora, The untold Sorrow and Hypnosis.

Shindig for Cambodia - Raising Money to Build an Orphanage in Cambodia

Local northern bands have come together in droves to help out the Shaun Prest Cambodian Orphanage Appeal and are playing at venues in Leeds and Wakefield over the coming months to help raise money for the Campaign.

On Friday the 8th of October the Fenton in Leeds is playing host to a night of hard rock and punk featuring Auntiedope, The Swindells, The Sewersuckers and the Nottingham band The Amplifires. Tickets are available here.

The Guys from My Dying Bride are playing the Snooty Fox as Gargamel on Sunday the 24th of October supported by Halifax's finest metal bands including Hypnosis, The Untold Sorrow and Vonificous Hora. Get your tickets here.

Carpe Diem is offering a free night of muscial entertainment on the 18th of November with Auntiedope, the Blind Dead Mcjones Band, The Tipsy Lions and Icon 13. All donations are welcome and you'll be pestered by a guy with a bucket to give generously for the cause.

Finally, we have Exit State headlining at the Well in Leeds on Thursday the 9th of December supported by Auntiedope and two bands yet to be announced. Tickets will be £6.00 on the door or £5.50 online and will be available soon.

Already a local legend on the Leeds live music scene, rockabilly punk guerillas Auntiedope are set to take themselves to the next level with plans to tour more widely around the UK and to bring their uniquely upbeat and edgy sound to a much wider audience. Auntiedope have been resident at the Primrose for the past two years and have played at many of Leeds' best-known live music venues including Joseph's Well, Carpe Diem, the Pack Horse, the Cockpit, the Fenton and many more.

They will be in the recording studio this Friday to remaster some old classics and belt out some new tracks in preparation for the next stage in their evolution as punk rock gurus of angst, attitude and loud noise.

Bowie and the 60s

It was pointed out to me the other day by a friend that some of my all time favorite Bowie has been floating around on PooTube like a dejected Mr Hanky, so I thought I'd best go and check it out. Bowie's music from the late 60s is just utterly unique, lyrically genius and deviantly innocent, challenging, exploratory and very charming. Its easy to forget that Bowie started out with such an amazing capacity to mesmorise and enchant almost like no other artist before or since. Lines such as:

Who's that hiding in the apple tree

clinging to a branch

Don't be afraid its only me

Looking for a little romance

are just packed with moral ambivalence and dubious sexuality. This to me is the best of Bowie by far. The Laughing Gnome is perhaps a little too contrived for my tastes, but She's Got Medals, Uncle Arthur, Rubber Band and numerous more are just spine tinglingly good.

Well a few of us went to see 'Let the Right One In' at Leeds Vue at the Lights last night' - and I'm just not sure a vampire movie is meant to traumatise you in quite that way. I'm going to be having nightmares about 1970s knitwear, woolly Jerseys, rollnecks and the like for months. It took us all about 40 minutes to guess whether the film was set in the 70s or whether there were just some particularly badly dressed Swede's having their blood drained to feed the appetite of that archetypally liminal and borderline menstrual twelve year old vampire girl. You could spend hours mulling over the symbolism, and at least from that point of view its not you're average salacious slashing, biting and shagging vampire fayre.

Anyway, the girl's henchman (father/ brother figure) is getting on a bit and keeps botching it when hunting for her dinner so she finds herself a substitute to groom in the form of a wet twelve year old boy who lives next door, and wins his affection by helping him to stand up to some bullies who have obviously seen Deliverance about a 1000 times - the opening words of the film are 'Squeal like a pig' according to the subtitles at least.

I suppose the demographic of the theatre was probably Swedish folk, knitwear fetishists, vampire movie lovers and the odd person who should probably be on the sex offenders register. If you think this is you, then go and see it and find out how it all pans out.

The Official Mik Artistik website describes the band as 'surreal punk, funk, catholic, electric comedy phenomenon', which pretty well sums them up. As well as the music Mik also dabbles in the odd bit of art work including I am lead to believe, paper bag drawings and portraits.

I first came across Mik Artistik at the penultimate Caberet Heaven at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds during October 2007. What a laugh! Mik Artistik instantly reminded me of Half Man Half Biscuit, and he is definitely the Yorkshire equivalent with his pedestrian subject matter, characteristic northern wit and a genius for bringing local colour into his repetoire. Incredibly silly, down-to-earth and rough and ready. Unfortunately I couldn't find 'My secret cloak of invisibility' or the fantastic 44 years To Live on YouTube, but someone has put up a couple of Mik's numbers from the night at the Brudenell. Look out for him in Leeds (upcoming venues are posted on Mik's MySpace page. He performed at the Millrace in November 2007 and I couldn't drag myself the half mile down the road to go and listen. I should be ashamed!

Anyway, what sort of a nut job writes his mobile phone number on the back of a wooden clothes peg and shows it on one of his music videos? You've got to love the daft bugger. Have a look at the silly sod in action:

Everyone who likes the dead Kennedys has probably had one of those deadend jobs which makes it almost compulsory to listen to 'Take this Job and Shove it' 20 times a day. For me this was in the early 1990s while working for an illiterate local rag. The place was Dickensian to say the least - they didn't even have managers, but rather overseers - How Hard Times is that? My fondest memory of that place is standing outside the head office one day, spitting in a copy of that morning's newspaper, screwing it up and chucking the rancid thing. Anyway, I digress; the Dead Kennedys are cuddly bundles of love fun and you should listen to them in the bath with your favorite rubber duck.

Anyway, on pretty much the same subject, there's something always pertinent and relevant for me in the subject matter of the Dead Kennedy's music. I guess I share Biafra's sence of indignant self-righteousness - 'I fought the law' - UK Smoking Ban, grrrr. Nazi Punks F*** off, calls to mind a couple of instances of fisty cuffs in the past 12 months with some blue collar white supremasist types. BNP supporters don't seem to have heard just yet that they are supposed to be engaged in political dialogue rather than brawling in the streets.

One thing that many of Biafra's polemical lyrics share in common is that they attempt to stir up a social conscience in the listener, while stirring them up to indignant anger and the same time. And no Biafra does not kill children. If you want to understand the meaning behind this song, then you could do worse than reading something about Jonathan Swift's 'Modest Proposal'.
